Chat On vs. Chat Off
Does muting All actually make me play better, or just calmer?
Some high-level players mute everyone in solo queue on the theory that chat rarely carries useful information and going without it forces better independent map-reading. Research on League players found something slightly different: people mute to protect their own headspace, not because they do not want the information — several described not wanting to be swept up by teammates' judgment mid-game. The honest counterpoint has to be on camera: muting kills useful pings and callouts too, not only toxicity. The data should reflect that trade-off rather than landing on "muting = better", or the video is dishonest.
The rules
- 01 10 games with chat on, then 10 with All chat muted.
- 02 Pings stay allowed in both halves — the variable is chat, not communication.
- 03 Jungle both sets, same champion where possible, to control the variable.
- 04 Rate my own tilt 1–10 immediately after every game, before I see the result sink in.
